The Universityof Arizona Saxophone Studio will present a concert featuring the award-winning Catalina Saxophone Quartet on Tuesday (Dec. 1) at 11:30 a.m. at The Arizona Senior Academy.

Members of the Quartet include Cesar Manjarrez on soprano saxophone, Christine Yi on alto, Jacob Lopez on tenor and Jeffrey Malone on baritone saxophone. Ensembles in various instrumentations will also include doctoral candidate Chris Herald on the alto saxophone.

The concert will open with Darius Milhaud’s “Scaramouch” for saxophone and piano.  Milhaud’s music features the saxophone’s versatility through melodies and the technical agility of Brazilian dance sections.

The program will continue with Edison Denisov’s “Sonata for alto saxophone and cello.”  Denisov’s music explores the sonic and melodic combination of these two voices through amazing technical passages and slow intertwining melodies using extended techniques such as quarter tones and multiphonics (a technique where a monophonic musical instrument—which normally produces only one note at a time—produces several notes at once.

The remainder of the concert will showcase the studio’s Catalina Saxophone Quartet.  Their varied program will include music by Bach, the French master Gabriel Pierne and closes with a fabulous tango.
