The Empire High School PANdemic Steel Drum Band

Empire High School’s Imperial PANdemic Steel Drum Band will be performing its seventh concert at the Academy Village’s Arizona Senior Academy on Tuesday. (Dec. 11)

Directed by David Walton, a founding member of the University of Arizona Steel Drum band program, the PANdemic performs  traditional Caribbean music, such as Calypso, reggae and soca (soul Calypso) along with pop, jazz and even the occasional classical piece.

The band is a little different each time it performs there, since it loses some old members through graduation and gains new ones from the younger classes, and since the band delights in presenting a variety of music that keeps it fresh.

The PANdemic has a busy performing schedule, recently adding its special vibe to the Tucson Meet Yourself celebration in downtown Tucson.

Tuesday’s show – free and open to the public – begins at 11:30 a.m. It will include some traditional holiday favorites, including a suite of character dances from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet, and the Sleigh Ride from Wolfgang’s father Leopold Mozart’s “Three German Dances.”
