Fans of classical guitar virtuoso Gabriel Ayala and pan-global percussionist extraordinaire Will Clipman (who have performed together as Duo Sonora for the pasts five years) will be treated to a free concert Tuesday (Jan. 8) 11:30 a.m. at Academy Village.
This return engagement to the Arizona Senior Academy Building‘s Great Room marks the Duo’s third appearance together at one of their favorite Southwestern venues, where the audiences are attentive, the acoustics are pristine, and the performances are enhanced by question-and-answer sessions that often reveal the personal stories of the artists and the in-depth intricacies of their music and instruments.
Ayala’s never-ending world tour as a soloist includes a recent performance in Rome, Italy for the Pope at the canonization of the first Native American saint, and an upcoming appearance at President Obama’s second inauguration in Washington, DC. Tuesday’s matinee concert at the Arizona Senior Academy may well be the only chance local audiences will have to catch these two master musicians together on the same stage in 2013.
Calling one another “my brother from another mother,” Ayala and Clipman share an uncanny degree of improvisational simpatico on stage, creating a sonic synergy much greater than the term “duo” suggests, and a vibration of sheer enjoyment that never fails to envelop the listener.
Playing a repertoire of Ayala’s original “jazzmenco” compositions and select jazz, Afro-Cuban, Latin, pop and world music covers, Duo Sonora offers a buffet of musical genres sure to please the most discerning palette.
Academy Village is an active-adult community located off Old Spanish Trail six miles southeast of Saguaro National Park East, where members enjoy sharing weekly concerts with the public. Due to the popularity of Arizona Senior Academy events and limited seating, non-members are encouraged to make reservations.
Concert-goers can also enjoy lunch at the Academy Café, across the courtyard from the Senior Academy Building. Open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the café’s menu items range from $4.50 to $9.75.
