Those who have had the pleasure of experiencing recent performances by the University of Arizona’s Graduate String Quartet will find their new name most appropriate: “Quartet Lyrique.” On Tuesday November 13th, the ensemble will present an 11:30 a.m. concert at the Arizona Senior Academy, performing quartets selected from their current repertoire which includes string quartets by Beethoven, Debussy, Bartok and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra’s current composer-in-residence, Dan Coleman.
Quartet Lyrique is made up of master’s and doctoral students selected from a national and international search. Current members of the quartet, who won the silver medal at the 2018 Music Teachers National Association National Competition, include violinists Stella Kim (New Zealand) and Laura Cásarez (Texas), violist Tiezheng Shen (China), and cellist Diana Yusupov (Australia). The ensemble contributes to the Fred Fox School of Music outreach and educational initiatives.
Stella Kim, a second-year doctoral student, received her master’s degree from the University of Auckland. As winner of the UA Concerto Competition in 2016, she performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Arizona Symphony Orchestra.
Laura Cásarez is pursuing her master’s degree at the U of A, having earned her undergraduate degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. As a member of the Shepherd School Symphony Tour Orchestra, she had the privilege of performing at Carnegie Hall in 2016.
Award-winning violist and doctoral student Tiezheng Shen recently made his solo debuts at Carnegie Hall and Wiener Saal Mozarteum in Salzburg. His new CD, “Works for Viola and Guitar by Austrian Romantic Composers” will be released this year.
Diana Yusupov, currently pursuing her master’s degree, is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, where she won a number of competitions including the Piatti Competition, Sonata Prize, and Bach Competition.
