The Vail Chorale performs under the direction of Fred Reinagel, an ASA member and resident of Academy Village.

Now in its second season, The Vail Chorale will present its autumn concert on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Room of the Arizona Senior Academy at Academy Village.  Attendees will be treated to an eclectic mix of choral selections from classical styles to popular standards.  The free concert is open to the public.

The Vail Chorale is a community choral group open to all. Its director, Fred Reinagel, believes that opportunities for community singing, sharing in the joy of making music together, should be available to all.

The program will open with the Chorale’s now-traditional a cappella rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

Featured Renaissance pieces include an Alleluia by Palestrina, an Italian madrigal by Arcadelt, and an English part song by Dowland.  Baroque selections include Purcell’s setting of “If Music be the Food of Love” and a Bach chorale from his Cantata no. 26.  Romantic music is represented by Schumann’s “Gute Nacht” (Goodnight) – which will be sung in German and English, Dvorak’s “In the Rye Fields” (translated from the Czech), and the rousing “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves” from Verdi’s opera Nabucco.

The traditional Welsh Air “The Ash Grove” will also be performed, along with popular favorites including Gershwin’s “Embraceable You” and a medley from the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof.

Reinagel, The Vail Chorale’s director, shares his lifelong love for choral singing and music of all styles with the ensemble.  Members say his enthusiasm for the community chorus experience and his knowledge of choral music technique inspire the group to work hard while having fun.

The group’s assistant director, Melissa Hale, will conduct several of the pieces for Saturday’s program.  The Chorale is happy to welcome back Merilee Leishman, who will perform a piano solo as well as provide accompaniment for some of the concert selections.

Reinagel said next spring’s concert will shift emphasis from the heavier classics to a more lighthearted focus on Americana, and welcomes any singers to join the group when rehearsals resume after the New Year.  Email  or call 520-647-3801.

The Vail Chorale is jointly sponsored by the Arizona Senior Academy at Academy Village and the Vail School District.  Academy Village is an active-adult community located off Old Spanish Trail six miles southeast of Saguaro National Park East, where members enjoy sharing weekly concerts with the general public.  Due to the popularity of Arizona Senior Academy events and the hall’s limited seating, non-members are encouraged to make reservations.
