Are you currently enrolled in one of several Medicare programs or have recently become eligible to enroll? If so, a timely lecture at the Arizona Senior Academy on Wednesday (Oct. 18) may be of special interest. The lecture “Got Medicare?” begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Great Room of the ASA Building.
Academy Village resident John Sundell, who volunteers in a national program that counsels Medicare enrollees, will talk about available Medicare coverages: Original Medicare, Advantage Plans, Prescription Drug Plans and Supplements (aka Medigap). Open enrollment begins Oct. 15, and it’s the time of year to review coverages for 2018.
For five years in Oregon and the past year in Tucson, Sundell has been a volunteer in SHIP, the nationwide State Health Insurance Assistance Program. SHIP volunteers answer questions about Medicare and assist people in obtaining coverage through its various options. In a typical year he counsels more than 200 individuals in one-on-one settings (by phone, e-mail or in person).
After receiving his B.A. and MBA degrees from Harvard University, Sundell began a career in corporate finance, mostly in the San Francisco Bay area. He retired in 2005 and moved to Oregon where he served on the county planning commission and a multi-county school board, in addition to his volunteer work with the Medicare assistance program.
Sundell purchased a home in Academy Village in early 2016, and now divides his year between the two locations.
