Arizona Opera is getting ready to kick off the 2016-2017 season with its 45th Anniversary Sapphire Celebration on October 9th in Tucson. This gala event will feature international superstar Frederica von Stade along with orchestra, chorus and soloists performing opera’s “greatest hits.”

As a prelude to the Anniversary Celebration, Studio Artists from the Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio will present a concert of arias, duets and ensembles at the Arizona Senior Academy on Tuesday (Sept. 27) at 11:30 a.m.

This season’s Studio Artists include newcomers Mariya Kaganskaya, mezzo-soprano from St. Petersburg, Russia, and Zachary Owen, bass-baritone from St. Charles, Ill. Returning for their second year are Joseph Lattanzi, baritone from Mableton, Ga., Alyssa Martin, mezzo-soprano from Greensboro, N.C., and Cody Martin, pianist/coach from Mascoutah, Ill.

Now beginning its 10th season, the Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio provides critical support for promising young singers and pianist/coaches as they develop their skills and prepare for the demands and challenges of an operatic career, and brings emerging artists of the highest caliber to Arizona. In residence all season, Studio Artists can be seen performing both on Arizona Opera’s mainstage and throughout Arizona. Arizona Opera also provides well-rounded, personalized instruction designed to propel each artist to the next level.

The current Studio Artists will be joined by alumni artists singing in the Sapphire Celebration in October. They also will perform roles in other operas from the 2016-2017 Arizona Opera Season, including Rossini’s La Cenerentola (Cinderella), Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and Dvorak’s Rusalka.

Tuesday’s concert at the Arizona Senior Academy is partially sponsored by Academy members Suzanne and Jed Kee.
