The Arizona Senior Academy welcomes the TSO String Quartet back for a second concert this year. Their performance will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 19) in the Academy’s Great Room. They will be performing works by Felix Mendelssohn, Antonin Dvorak, Claire Thai, and Michael McClean.
The Arizona Daily Star describes the quartet as “the closest thing Arizona has to a European chamber ensemble.” They provide classical recital concerts, children’s performances, adult education programs, and string quartet workshops throughout Arizona. The performers are:
Joseph Rousos-Hammond, a native of Tucson, began playing the violin in his elementary school orchestra program. He received music degrees from Indiana University and the Chicago College of Performing Arts. Joseph has played with several orchestras and participated in music festivals around the country. He performs in Tucson with True Concord and St. Andrew’s Bach Society.
Wynne Wong-Rife, another Tucson native, began playing the violin at age 10. She studied briefly at the University of Arizona, subsequently receiving degrees in violin performance from the Eastman School of Music and New England Conservatory of Music. Wynne has played with the TSO since 1985, and is Assistant Director of the Tucson Jr. Strings.
Ilona Vukovic-Gay is the TSO Assistant Principal Viola and the Young Composers Project Instructor. She earned a performance degree from the Manhattan School of Music and a graduate degree in performance and compostition from Yale University. Ilona has composed and arranged for viola solo, string quartet, and the TSO KinderKonzerts series.
Anne Gratz is the newest member of the quartet, and is Principal Cello of the TSO. A native of Indiana, Anne graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy and holds degrees from Eastman School of Music, including an Orchestral Studies Diploma. Anne is active as a cello teacher and works with many schools and music programs in Tucson. She performs with True Concord and Tucson Pops Orchestra.
